Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Dr Fatima Maada Bio, joined President Julius Maada Bio and Members of Parliament at the State Opening of the Fourth Session of the Sixth Parliament in Freetown on August 7, 2026, marking the formal commencement of a new legislative year.
The ceremony, held at the Chamber of Parliament, brought together political leaders and representatives from across the country to inaugurate the new session, during which the President is expected to outline the government’s legislative agenda and key national development priorities.
In a statement issued after the event, Dr Bio described the occasion as more than a constitutional requirement, portraying it as a reflection of Sierra Leone’s democratic resilience and institutional continuity. She said the President’s address served as a renewed call for unity, accountability, and purposeful leadership at a time when the country continues to pursue national transformation.
The First Lady, who also serves as President of the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), expressed confidence in Sierra Leone’s future, noting that progress depends on the collective commitment of citizens to peace, justice, and inclusive development.
She urged Sierra Leoneans to prioritise national interest over personal or political divisions, emphasising that unity and service are essential to building a stronger and more prosperous nation.
The State Opening of Parliament is a constitutionally mandated event that sets the tone for legislative activities, providing a platform for the executive to present its policy direction and priorities for the session.
