President Julius Maada Bio on Monday, 10 August 2026, conferred Sierra Leone’s distinguished national honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Rokel (GCOR) on Dr. Abdu Muwonge in recognition of his outstanding service and the successful completion of his tenure as World Bank Country Manager for Sierra Leone.

The ceremony marked the government’s formal appreciation of Dr. Muwonge’s contribution to Sierra Leone’s development during his time in office.

President Bio described Dr. Muwonge as an exceptional development partner whose commitment to the country went beyond the normal responsibilities of his position. He said Dr. Muwonge had demonstrated dedication and professionalism throughout his tenure and had played an important role in supporting Sierra Leone’s development efforts.

The President expressed gratitude for the support provided by the World Bank under Dr. Muwonge’s leadership and acknowledged the strong partnership that had existed between Sierra Leone and the international financial institution during the period.

President Bio also wished Dr. Muwonge success in his next assignment, noting that his contribution to Sierra Leone would be remembered with appreciation.

The Grand Commander of the Order of the Rokel is one of Sierra Leone’s highest national honours and is awarded to individuals who have rendered distinguished and exemplary service to the nation.
