22-year-old man, Ibrahim Sorie Kamara, has died three days after his reported arrest in Freetown, with his family calling for a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his arrest and death.

Kamara, a resident of No. 1E Farreh Lane, Grant Lane, Mount Aureol Community, was reportedly arrested on Monday, August 3, 2026, and died on Thursday, August 6.

According to family members and community residents, Kamara and another young man were allegedly arrested by an OSD officer identified as Joseph Lamin over accusations relating to the sale of tramadol and the alleged theft of two mobile phones.

Witnesses claimed that Kamara had recently received medical treatment and had gone to Grant Lane Junction to purchase pap to take with his medication when the confrontation occurred.

The family alleges that residents pleaded with the officer to consider Kamara’s medical condition, but he was allegedly handcuffed and taken away with the other suspect.

The family later began searching for Kamara after reportedly being unable to establish his whereabouts. Relatives said they visited Bengazi Police Division but were initially informed that there was no record of his arrest there.

They further alleged that the arresting officer demanded NLe 500 in connection with his missing phones. The family claims that after they attempted to provide the money, they were later informed that Kamara had died and were directed to Kingtom Police Hospital.

Meanwhile, questions have also been raised about the involvement of a community safety volunteer identified as B.B.C.

Kamara’s younger sister, Rashidatu Kamara, alleged that the family gave B.B.C NLe 50 to help establish her brother’s whereabouts, but claimed that the family did not receive clear information about his location.

B.B.C, however, said he was called to the scene following reports that the OSD officer had fired a warning shot. He said he arrived and found the suspects already in handcuffs. He also acknowledged receiving NLe 50 to help establish Kamara’s whereabouts.

Kamara’s parents, Abdul Aziz Kamara and Mamusu Kamara, are demanding justice and a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding their son’s arrest and death.

Community members have also raised concerns about alleged harassment and arrests carried out in the name of combating drug abuse.

As of press time, the Sierra Leone Police had not issued an official statement on the case. Sources at the OSD Headquarters in Brookfields, however, reportedly said investigations are ongoing.

The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances of Kamara’s arrest, his treatment following the arrest, and the events leading to his death.
