Sierra Leone has commenced preparations to host two major international information conferences in September—the UNESCO International Day for Universal Access to Information and the International Conference of Information Commissioners (ICIC).
The three-day programme, to be held at the JMB International Conference Centre in Lungi, is expected to attract approximately 300 international delegates.
Minister of Information and Civic Education Chernor Bah convened a high-level coordination meeting with key government institutions to coordinate preparations for the events. He described the conferences as landmark occasions for Sierra Leone and said the international participation reflects growing recognition of the country’s efforts to advance access to information.
Bah stressed the need for strong inter-ministerial collaboration, citing President Julius Maada Bio’s directive for all institutions involved to “put our best foot forward” to ensure successful hosting.
Chairman of the Right to Access Information Commission (RAIC), Ibrahim Seaga Shaw, provided a technical update and identified transportation as a key logistical consideration, while calling for stronger coordination among participating institutions.
Representatives from the Ministries of Finance, Transport and Aviation, Health, Communication, Technology and Innovation, Foreign Affairs, and the Office of National Security also provided updates on their preparations and commitments.
Minister Bah further called for the momentum from the conferences to be sustained, with the aim of positioning Sierra Leone to attract and host more high-level international events in the future.
The preparations are focused on ensuring a seamless experience for delegates while showcasing Sierra Leone’s capacity to host major international engagements and strengthening the country’s profile as a destination for future global conferences.
