Kumba Zainab Brima announced her arrival in Spanish football with a debut goal on Sunday, helping Deportivo Alavés secure a 2-0 victory over Valencia in their Liga F opener at Mendizorroza Stadium.
The 24-year-old Sierra Leone international opened the scoring in the 22nd minute following a scramble inside the box, firing a right-footed effort past Valencia goalkeeper Alice Pinguet. Ainhoa Guallar doubled Alavés’ advantage in the 68th minute to seal victory for the newly promoted hosts.
Brima joined Alavés on loan from Latvian club Riga FC Women in August following a prolific campaign in which she finished as the Baltic Women’s League’s top scorer with 23 goals. Signed to strengthen the attack, she made her first home league start and played 75 minutes before being replaced by Reyes.
Alavés dominated large periods of the match, with Brima posing a constant threat before finding the breakthrough. Valencia, who also returned to the top flight following promotion, struggled to create clear-cut opportunities and managed just one shot on target in the first half.
Spanish newspaper El Correo reported that Brima, the Baltic League’s top scorer, produced several promising runs and attempts before scoring in the 22nd minute. The league’s official match report also praised her determination, noting that she beat her defender before unleashing a powerful shot into the net.
The victory gives Alavés a perfect start to their return to Spain’s top-flight women’s division. They will travel to face Atlético Madrid next Sunday.
