The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Health (MoH), unveiled a US$2.5 million consignment of essential medicines and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) supplies in Freetown.
The life-saving commodities have been delivered to the stores of the National Medical Supplies Agency (NMSA) and are being prepared for immediate distribution to health facilities across the country.
The package includes critical supplies tailored for emergency obstetric care, general deliveries, Caesarean sections, and healthcare emergencies. Designed to target the primary drivers of maternal and pediatric mortality in Sierra Leone, the inventory includes specialized treatments for postpartum hemorrhage (bleeding after birth), severe infections (sepsis), high blood pressure, and malaria.
Speaking at the unveiling, Minister of Health Austin Demby, reaffirmed the government’s determination to improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations.
“This investment demonstrates Government’s continued commitment to protecting critical health services for women, children and families across Sierra Leone,” Minister Demby stated.
The procurement comes as the Ministry of Health actively executes its 300DaysofActivism for Triple Zeros campaign, an initiative aimed at eliminating preventable maternal deaths, unmet family planning needs, and gender-based violence.
To safeguard the investment and ensure the supplies reach patients without interception, health authorities announced robust accountability measures. The full trajectory of the commodities will be tracked from NMSA central warehouses directly to frontline clinics and hospitals to prevent leakages and potential misuse.
