The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has opened a new police clinic in Tankoro, Kono District, to improve access to healthcare for police personnel and residents of surrounding communities.

The facility forms part of Inspector-General of Police William Fayia Sellu’s efforts to improve personnel welfare, decentralise essential services and strengthen relations between the police and the public.

The clinic was officially unveiled on October 9, 2026, at a ceremony attended by representatives of the District Health Management Team, paramount chiefs, the Senior District Officer, the Commanding Officer of the 9 Infantry Battalion, human rights organisations, business people and other community stakeholders.

Speaking at the event, the Medical Superintendent of the Sierra Leone Police, Dr John M. Konteh, outlined the clinic’s capacity and explained how it would provide medical services to police personnel and members of the surrounding community.

He acknowledged the challenges involved in delivering healthcare and called on development partners, community stakeholders and philanthropists to support the facility’s continued operation and expansion.

Dr Konteh also expressed the ambition to upgrade the clinic to hospital status in the future, enabling it to provide a wider range of medical services.

Former Tankoro Local Unit Commander, CSP Augustine Kamara, traced the initiative to a visit by the Inspector-General of Police to Kono District about two years ago, when the need to improve access to healthcare for police personnel was identified.

The project was advanced by successive Local Unit Commanders, including CSP Kamara, CSP Fayia David Joshua and the current commander, CSP Dr Sahr Nyuma. Community support also contributed to the establishment of the facility.

The initiative follows the opening of a police clinic at Motema Division approximately two years ago, as part of efforts to bring healthcare services closer to police personnel and the communities they serve.

The clinic was officially opened through a ribbon-cutting ceremony performed by PC Alie Musa of Mafindor Chiefdom, Public Relations Officer of the Council of Paramount Chiefs, assisted by Deputy City Mayor Sheku Kamara.

The opening of the Tankoro Police Clinic marks another step in efforts to improve access to healthcare in Kono District while supporting police welfare and strengthening police-community relations.
