High Court Suspends Tuesday Sittings Over Supreme Court Constitutional Amendment Matter

The Judiciary of Sierra Leone has suspended High Court sittings at the Main Law Courts Building on Tuesday, Oct. 13, to accommodate ongoing Supreme Court proceedings over proposed constitutional amendments.

In a public notice, the Office of the Deputy Master and Registrar of the High Court informed court users that no hearings would take place at the building on the scheduled date.

The notice, signed by Deputy Master and Registrar Hulaimatu T. Christian-Moses, attributed the suspension to proceedings before the Supreme Court concerning the constitutional amendment.

The announcement comes as the Supreme Court prepares to resume hearings on the constitutional dispute on Tuesday, following proceedings on Oct. 8.

The case concerns challenges relating to the Constitution of Sierra Leone (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which has prompted legal arguments over the process used to pass the proposed constitutional changes.

The suspension applies specifically to High Court sittings at the Main Law Courts Building on Oct. 13. The notice does not state that all High Court operations across the country have been suspended.

Court users, lawyers and litigants with matters scheduled at the affected building are advised to take note of the change and seek clarification from the relevant court registry regarding their cases.

The Judiciary has not indicated in the notice when normal sittings at the building will resume.
