University Lecturers Maintains Strike, Demands 100% Salary Increase
The Academic Staff Association of the University of Sierra Leone (ASA-USL) has resolved to continue its industrial strike until the government meets its demands for a 100% salary increase and approves revised Conditions of Service, or provides a written commitment addressing both issues.
The decision followed a general membership meeting held on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at the Tunde Cole Building at Fourah Bay College, where members reviewed the ongoing industrial action organised by the Union of Academic Staff Associations (UASA).
In a press release signed by its President, Desmond Songo-Davies, ASA-USL reaffirmed UASA’s role as the body responsible for negotiating on behalf of academic staff.
Members also agreed that any decision to suspend or end the strike must be discussed with and approved by the association’s general membership plenary.
Despite maintaining its position on the strike, ASA-USL said it remains willing to participate in genuine and constructive negotiations through UASA.
The association also urged UASA to strengthen engagement with relevant government authorities and other stakeholders to help secure an amicable resolution to the dispute.
ASA-USL represents academic staff from Fourah Bay College (FBC), the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM), and the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS).
The association said its continued participation in the strike reflects its position on the outstanding salary and employment conditions demands, while emphasising the need for a peaceful resolution.
“ASA-USL reiterates its commitment to a peaceful resolution through genuine dialogue and urges all parties to engage constructively in the interest of academic staff and public tertiary education in Sierra Leone,” the release stated.
