Josefien Betist to Make History as Sierra Leone’s First World Boxing Cup Finals Competitor
Sierra Leonean boxer Josefien Betist is set to make history at the 2026 World Boxing Cup Finals in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from 26 November to 4 December.
Betist’s selection marks a milestone for the country, as she is expected to become the first Sierra Leonean to compete at the prestigious season-ending event. She will also be the only African female boxer to participate.
The Sierra Leonean will compete in the women’s 60kg category, where eight qualified boxers will battle for the title, placing her among an international field of elite competitors.
Beyond the chance to compete for honours, the tournament will provide Betist with valuable exposure at the highest level of international boxing. The event could also help strengthen her competitive profile as she works towards future major championships and potential Olympic qualification.
Her participation is expected to draw attention to the development of women’s boxing in Sierra Leone, highlighting the opportunities available to female athletes when they gain access to international competitions.
Betist’s achievement also helps Sierra Leone raise its profile in international boxing and demonstrate that its athletes can compete beyond the continent.
However, adequate preparation and logistical support will be crucial ahead of the competition. For Sierra Leone, the Ministry of Sports, the National Olympic Committee, corporate sponsors and the public could help cover the costs of travel, accommodation, training and medical care for Betist and her coaching team.
As the countdown to the competition continues, Betist’s appearance in Tashkent will rally behind one of its athletes as she prepares to represent the country on the global stage.
