Basita Michael Defends Liberty TV Presenters Khadija Bangura and Mabel Kabba

Lawyer Basita Michael has publicly expressed support for Liberty TV presenters Khadija Bangura and Mabel Kabba, warning against attempts to judge independent media voices based on their perceived political affiliations.

In a direct message to the two presenters, Michael described such attempts as tactics used by individuals seeking to undermine independent voices, evade accountability and deflect legitimate criticism.

“The calculated attempts to define the work of independent and critical voices through perceived political affiliations are nothing new. Such tactics have long been the refuge of those who seek to conceal their own insecurities, evade accountability and deflect legitimate criticism. Yet, they have never succeeded in diminishing the value of independent voices or their contributions to public discourse,” she stated.

She further acknowledged the efforts of the two presenters in building a platform that enables citizens to better understand and engage with issues of national importance.

“Many Sierra Leoneans, across the political spectrum, see you. We see not only your achievements, but also the hard work, courage and commitment behind your efforts to build a platform that helps citizens better understand and engage with issues of national importance,” Michael added.

She concluded by expressing pride in the presenters and other journalists committed to promoting open discussions, asking difficult questions and holding public officials accountable.

“We are proud of you, and of every journalist committed to building platforms where competing views can be heard, difficult questions can be asked, and those who exercise public power can be held accountable.”

The two journalists have faced criticism from some supporters of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), who have accused them of being sympathetic to the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC).

Kabba and Bangura are among Sierra Leone’s few prominent female journalists, having risen from humble beginnings in the country’s media industry. The pair began their journalism careers at Radio Democracy before later leaving together to establish Liberty TV.
