Samura Kamara, Others to Face High Court Today
Sierra Leone’s main opposition party, the All People’s Congress (APC) newly elected presidential candidate, Samura Kamara will face the High Court today, together with five other accused persons.
Kamara is in court after the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) alleged that he misled the principal and misappropriated public funds meant for the renovation of Sierra Leone’s Chancery Building in New York when he was Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs five years ago.
The former Bank Governor had long denied the allegations and claimed that the case was politically motivated to smear the good image and reputation he has nurtured over the years.
Today, Justice Adrian Fisher will rule on a no-case submission argument put forward by defense lawyers.
Kamara was elected in a landslide victory at the APC’s primaries over the weekend.
Political analysts have opined that if the court found Kamara guilty, it could lead to chaos as he would be barred from contesting in the 24 June elections this year.
