China has announced that the 2026 World Internet Conference (WIC) Wuzhen Summit will be held from 2 to 5 November 2026 in Wuzhen, Zhejiang Province, bringing together global leaders, policymakers, technology innovators and academics to shape the future of the digital economy and internet governance.

The summit, unveiled during a press conference in Beijing on 29 September, will be held under the theme “Open Source, Openness, Co-Building and Sharing: Jointly Building a Community with a Shared Future in Cyberspace.”

Organisers say the event will serve as one of the world’s most influential platforms for discussing emerging technologies, digital development and international cooperation in cyberspace.

The four-day summit will feature an opening ceremony, a main forum and 27 specialised sub-forums addressing critical issues including artificial intelligence (AI), global cyber governance, robotics and embodied intelligence, trusted intelligent agents, spatiotemporal intelligence and the role of digital technologies in promoting green and low-carbon development.

For African countries pursuing ambitious digital transformation agendas, the gathering presents an opportunity to gain insights into emerging technologies, strengthen international partnerships and explore pathways for accelerating AI adoption and digital innovation.

A key attraction of the summit will be the expanded Wuzhen Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence, which is expected to bring together executives from leading technology companies, representatives of major open-source AI model enterprises and renowned AI scientists from around the world.

The discussions will focus on building a global open-source artificial intelligence ecosystem, promoting collaboration in AI development and addressing challenges associated with the rapid evolution of intelligent technologies.

As African governments and businesses increasingly invest in artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure and cybersecurity, the outcomes of these discussions could offer valuable lessons for policymakers, researchers and technology entrepreneurs across the continent.

Organisers also revealed that new research findings on artificial intelligence safety and governance will be released during the summit. The reports are expected to provide policy recommendations and practical guidance for governments and institutions seeking to balance innovation with responsible technology development.

Beyond its policy discussions, the summit will host a series of flagship events designed to showcase technological advancement and innovation. These include the World Internet Conference Awards for Pioneering Science and Technology, the Internet Light Expo, the “Straight to Wuzhen” Global Internet Competition, the Global Youth Leaders Programme and the Global Internet Talent Excellence Programme.

In another first, the historic Puyuan Fashion Ancient Town will be introduced as an additional venue for conference exchanges and cultural activities, providing participants with expanded opportunities for networking and engagement.

The summit is organised by the World Internet Conference and hosted by the People’s Government of Zhejiang Province, with support from international organisations including the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the GSM Association (GSMA).

Speaking at the press conference were World Internet Conference Secretary-General Ren Xianliang, Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee Standing Committee Member and Minister of Publicity Li Yanyi, and Tongxiang Municipal Party Secretary Wang Jian. The event was chaired by World Internet Conference Executive Deputy Secretary-General Liang Hao.

As nations across Africa accelerate efforts to build digital economies, expand internet access and harness artificial intelligence for development, the 2026 Wuzhen Summit is expected to provide a valuable platform for international dialogue, knowledge exchange and technology cooperation.

The conference is also expected to reinforce global efforts to build a more open, inclusive and sustainable digital future while encouraging greater collaboration between developed and emerging economies in the age of artificial intelligence.
