Doctor Drags Domestic Workers to Court Over Alleged $10,000 Theft
Fatmata Grace Bangura Three domestic workers appeared in court on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, accused of stealing more than ten thousand US dollars from the home of a doctor at Connaught Hospital in Freetown.
The accused, Juliana Kamara, Mabinty Kamara, and Ramatu Kamara, stood before Magistrate Mustapha Briama Jah at Freetown Magistrate Court Number 1. They face two charges: conspiracy to commit a crime and larceny in a dwelling house, under Section 13(a) of the Larceny Act of 1916.
According to police reports and coverage by the Standard Times Newspaper, the alleged theft took place sometime between August and October 2024 at Thompson Drive, Congo Cross in Freetown. During this period, the women worked as maids in the home of Dr. Melvina Thompson, who is attached to Connaught Hospital.
The police said the accused entered the doctor’s house on an unknown date within that time and stole $10,600, an amount equal to about two hundred and forty thousand Leones (NLe240,017). The money belonged to Dr. Thompson.
Because of the amount involved, the court did not take a plea from the women when the charges were read to them.
Their lawyer, Mohamed Yassin Conteh, asked the court to grant bail, but Magistrate Jah refused and ordered that the accused be held at the Female Correctional Facility in Freetown.
The case was adjourned to a new date for further hearing.
