A devastating fire on Monday, September 7, 2026, destroyed the Faith Glory Church at Sumaila Town in Freetown, reducing the building and its furniture to ashes.

The fire reportedly started at around 3:00 p.m., leaving residents and church members distressed as the flames engulfed the structure. The value of the property and furniture destroyed has not been independently established.

Residents at the scene dismissed speculation that the fire was caused by faulty electrical circuits, interrupted power supply or electricity from the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA). One bystander told Sierraloaded that the church regularly switched off its appliances and electrical switches.

Sierraloaded reporter Sahid Bangura contacted the National Fire Force at exactly 3:28 p.m. to report the incident. According to the report, the Fire Force arrived approximately 15 minutes later with a fire engine and firefighting equipment.

As firefighters approached the scene, some youths who had reportedly helped prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures pelted the vehicle with stones. Despite the incident, the firefighters proceeded with their operation and eventually extinguished the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains unknown. An investigation is expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and help prevent similar disasters in the future.
