“LThe National Revenue Authority (NRA) and the Ministry of Finance have launched a comprehensive strategy to enhance domestic revenue generation amid ongoing challenges.
During a recent meeting at the Customs Services Department, Finance Minister Sheku Ahmed Fantamadi Bangura conveyed a message from President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, stressing the urgent need to increase revenue mobilization. With the country’s revenue to GDP ratio at just 8.1% and high levels of expenditure, the delegates called for a critical need to prioritize revenue enhancement.
Minister Bangura addressed key challenges facing the NRA, including outdated compliance measures, limited use of technology, and the necessity for greater staff accountability. He outlined a series of planned reforms focused on integrating technology and improving administrative practices. The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investing in technological solutions to help enhance tax collection and management processes.
Financial Secretary, Matthew Dingie emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in revenue generation. He urged NRA staff to make full use of the available tools and systems, assuring them of the Ministry’s support. He also highlighted the need for a cultural shift within the NRA towards greater accountability and performance driven by motivation.
Mr. Kabineh M. Kallon, Board Chair of the NRA, remarked that the revenue targets should inspire staff rather than serve as simple goals. He encouraged employees to take proactive measures and adhere to tax laws to boost revenue collection.
Commissioner General of the NRA, Mrs. Jeneba J. Bangura, confirmed that immediate actions are being implemented to address the current revenue challenges. She noted that the engagement with Ministry of Finance leadership is designed to reinforce the President’s message and motivate NRA staff to adopt best practices in compliance.
The collaboration between the Ministry of Finance and the NRA was believed to be a commitment to overcoming existing challenges and enhancing revenue performance. Notably, through targeted reforms, increased accountability, and the implementation of technological advancements, the NRA aims to significantly improve the revenue landscape in the near future.
