The European Union (EU), through the Support to the West African Integrated Maritime Security (SWAIMS) Project, has donated two brand-new Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIBs) along with forensic kits to the Naval Service of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) to enhance maritime security operations across the country’s territorial waters.
The donation was officially handed over during a ceremony held on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at the Headquarters of the Sierra Leone Navy (SLN) in Freetown. The equipment was received on behalf of the Government of Sierra Leone by the Deputy Minister of Defence, Colonel Muana Brima Massaquoi (Rtd).
The newly acquired RHIBs are expected to significantly improve the operational capabilities of the Sierra Leone Navy in conducting maritime patrols, surveillance, search-and-rescue missions, and combating illegal activities at sea. The accompanying forensic kits will also strengthen the Navy’s ability to investigate maritime crimes and gather evidence to support law enforcement operations.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, officials highlighted the importance of regional and international partnerships in promoting maritime safety and security within West Africa. The donation forms part of ongoing efforts under the SWAIMS Project to support coastal states in addressing challenges such as piracy, illegal fishing, trafficking, and other transnational maritime threats.
The support from the European Union underscores its continued commitment to strengthening maritime governance and security across the region while enhancing the capacity of Sierra Leone’s defence and security institutions.
The Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces expressed appreciation to the European Union and the SWAIMS Project for the timely intervention, noting that the equipment will contribute significantly to safeguarding the country’s maritime domain and protecting its economic resources.
