The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) have arrested and detained 11 individuals following a violent disturbance linked to a football match along Kroo Town Road in Freetown on Sunday, September 13, 2026.
The arrests were disclosed during a police press briefing held at the Police Officers’ Mess in Kingtom on Wednesday, September 16.
According to the police, the incident occurred following a football match between Kroo Town Road Football Club and Kossoh Town Football Club, with tensions among supporters reportedly escalating into violence.
The disturbance later spread from Kroo Town Road to surrounding areas, including Wellington Street off Siaka Stevens Street, prompting the intervention of security forces.
Freetown West Regional Commander, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Sylvester Koroma, said the police responded after receiving information about the unrest and moved to disperse the supporters involved.
He confirmed that a woman was found dead during the incident, but said the circumstances surrounding her death remain under investigation.
The police have not officially confirmed the cause of death, while a post-mortem examination is being conducted to establish the precise circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Alieu Jalloh, head of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), said the 11 suspects are being investigated for alleged offences including throwing missiles, disorderly conduct and possession of offensive weapons.
The police said investigations are continuing, with efforts also underway to identify and apprehend other individuals who may have participated in the violence.
The incident has brought renewed attention to violence associated with football-related gatherings, as police continue to investigate the events surrounding the disturbance and the death recorded during the unrest.
