Mayor of Freetown, Her Worship Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has joined other Sierra Leoneans to donate blood to Wellington fire victims.

The incident took place on Friday 5th November, 2021 at around 10:00PM when a 40ft NP fuel tanker collided with a truck at PMB Junction in Wellington which led to the spill of fuel. As residents were fetching the fuel, an explosion took place. Over 100 dead was recorded and hundreds of Sierra Leoneans sustained injury which are hospitalized at Connaught Hospital, 34 Military Hospital, Choithram Hospital and other health centres. Vehicles, shops, business tables, motorbikes and many other properties were destroyed.

However, many sustained 2nd and 3rd degree burn which caused the invitation of Sierra Leoneans to donate blood. Her Worship joined other Sierra Leoneans and donated her blood to help save lives.

“The hospitalized burns victims of last Friday’s fuel explosion urgently need blood. This afternoon I donated blood at the blood collection centre at PCMH on Fourah Bay Road. The staff were excellent; helpful and professional. It was an easy process. I encourage Freetonians to donate blood, you could be saving a life!” – She posted.
