Freetown City Mayor, Yvone Aki-Sawyer has advocated for more resources for financing climate action for all cities, including Freetown.

Mayor AKI-SAWYER recounted this as one of the many engagement she had in her participation in the COP28 in Dubai where she also served as Co/Chair for the C40 cities.

My first day at COP28 in Dubai started at the opening of the World Climate Action Summit. Following that, in my capacity as C40 Cities Co/Chair, I met with the Andrew Steer, CEO of Bezos Earthfund and his team along with the Mayors of Melbourne, Hobart and Mykolaiv. I then attended the first ever Local Climate Action Summit at COP28, a summit that spotlights the critical role of cities in addressing the climate crisis. It was a pleasure to run into Kenyan President H.E. William Ruto and Commonwealth Secretary-General Baroness Patricia Scotland and Sierra Leonean Youth activists between meetings! My day ended with a private dinner hosted by former New York Mayor and philanthropist Michael Bloomberg.

In my position as C40 Cities Co-Chair, I continue to advocate for more resources for financing climate action for all cities, including Freetown.
