Former Minister of Youth Bai Mamoud Bangura has garnered significant popularity among SLPP members of Parliament.

This development follows a call from Honorable Bashir Silikie, Deputy Leader of Government Business and representative of Bo District, urging members of Parliament from the opposition bench to support Bai Mamoud Bangura as the flagbearer for the All People’s Congress (APC) party.

Bangura received accolades recently when he accompanied his brother in Parliament, who was appointed by President Bio as Board Chairman of the Sierra Leone Maritime Administration. Hon. Bashir Silikie praised Bai Mamoud Bangura, describing him as a patriot.

However, the recognition and accolades from the SLPP bench have raised serious questions among many MP’s from the APC. During his tenure as Minister of Youth in the Ernest Bai Koroma APC regime, Bangura performed well, despite facing criticism from some Sierra Leoneans regarding the failed “youth farm project.”

Currently, Bai Mamoud Bangura is expressing interest in the flagbearer position. He is serving as the acting chairman of the APC party, a role he will maintain until the chairman and leader of the party delegation return from Nigeria.

Bai Mamoud Bangura’s bid for the flagbearer position faces challenges, particularly because many of his competitors for the same role are referred to as “supermen.” This situation has sparked concerns about why so many individuals within the APC aspire to the presidency, with many asserting that achieving this ambition will be difficult if the party does not unite and select a single candidate to challenge the SLPP in the upcoming 2028 general election.

Despite these challenges, it is believed that Bai Mamoud Bangura has gained significant support among the party’s youth, who are optimistic about his chances of winning the race.
