President Julius Maada Bio has called for deeper cooperation with the World Bank Group, highlighting infrastructure, energy and human capital as key areas for continued development investment in Sierra Leone.
Bio made the remarks Wednesday, September 9, during a meeting at State House in Freetown with Ousmane Diagana, the World Bank Group’s regional vice president for Western and Central Africa, and his delegation.
The engagement focused on strengthening the longstanding partnership between Sierra Leone and the World Bank, according to the information provided.
Finance Minister Karefa Kargbo welcomed the delegation and commended the World Bank for its continued support to Sierra Leone.
Kargbo referenced the Country Partnership Framework, which identifies expanding energy access, developing human capital and improving infrastructure among the country’s key development priorities.
Diagana, speaking for the World Bank Group, reaffirmed the institution’s support for Sierra Leone’s development agenda and described the country as an important partner.
He also praised Bio’s leadership as former chairman of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government and his commitment to Mission 300, an initiative aimed at expanding electricity access across Africa.
Bio described the World Bank relationship as dependable and impactful, saying projects supported by the institution have produced tangible benefits for communities across Sierra Leone.
The President pointed particularly to infrastructure projects, including bridge construction, which he said have improved connectivity, strengthened links between communities and supported economic and social activities.
Bio further pledged to strengthen cooperation with the World Bank Group and encourage strategic investments that can produce measurable and lasting improvements in the lives of Sierra Leoneans.
The meeting underscored the government’s continued focus on development cooperation with the World Bank, particularly through investments intended to expand opportunities and support sustainable national development.
