Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, Dr.Moinina David Sengeh, updated Sierra Leonean creatives on the launch of social media monetization on Wednesday, February 5, 2025.

He took to his Facebook page to announce the development to bloggers, content creators, influencers, musicians, and social media users.

In his post, the Chief Minister emphasized that the government is committed to and actively working toward the monetization of social media platforms in Sierra Leone.

He further stated, “Before we benefit from social media monetization, the government must establish a controlled payment system with the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Sierra Leone, enabling banks and mobile money companies to collaborate.” The Chief Minister reassured that the process is currently being tested and will be ready by mid-March.

He also mentioned that the Ministry of Information Technology and Innovation will facilitate the process and collaborate with Starlink to support X monetization.

The Chief Minister explained that for monetization to succeed, a structured approach is required, including financial systems with banks, addressing systems, and engagement with policy and lobbying efforts.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritizing capital development, adding, “The president is a listening man and is passionate about youth development.”

He also emphasized that social media use must be responsible, with users taking accountability for their activities, as there are laws in place to guide media usage.
