Activist Edmond Abu Warns of Fuel and Economic Shock After U.S.-Iran Talks Collapse
Aminata Koroma Prominent civil society voice, Edmond Abu, has raised alarm over potential global economic repercussions following the reported collapse of talks between the United States and Iran in Islamabad, warning that vulnerable nations like Sierra Leone could face severe consequences.
Speaking during a media engagement, Abu highlighted that the disagreement, particularly over Iran’s enriched uranium, could escalate geopolitical tensions, triggering a ripple effect across global markets. According to him, such developments are likely to result in sharp increases in the prices of fuel, gas, and fertilisers.
He cautioned that African countries, already grappling with economic challenges, would be disproportionately affected by any resulting shocks.
“The only weapon we have as ‘fontoba’ nations is prayer,” Abu stated. “Because even when two elephants make love, the grass suffers-talk more of when they fight.”
Abu’s remarks underscore growing concerns about how international conflicts and diplomatic breakdowns continue to affect smaller economies, particularly in Africa, where dependence on imported fuel and agricultural inputs leaves countries highly vulnerable to global price fluctuations.
He concluded by urging African nations to remain vigilant and united in the face of looming economic uncertainty.
