Ghana and Sierra Leone to Sign Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation
Deborah Sorie Ghana and Sierra Leone are set to formalize a Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC) on Thursday, April 23, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations between the two West African nations.
A Sierra Leonean delegation, led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Francess Piagie Alghali, is currently in Accra ahead of the signing ceremony.
Inaugural technical sessions began on Tuesday, April 21. During these meetings, technical teams from both countries have been finalizing agreements across various sectors to establish an institutional framework for long-term, sustainable development.
The commission focuses on several priority areas of mutual benefit, including: Trade and Agriculture, Defense and Security, Health, Energy, Tourism and Air Services
The PJCC was initially established in March 2025 following engagements between Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama and Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio. The leaders held bilateral discussions in Freetown in March 2025 and in Ghana in January 2026 to identify these key areas of cooperation.
Thursday’s signing ceremony will culminate these ongoing diplomatic efforts, officially establishing the new framework for economic and institutional collaboration between the Republic of Ghana and the Republic of Sierra Leone.
