Sierra Leone’s Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Dr. Isata Mahoi, has called for intensified efforts to advance women’s political leadership and participation across Africa, stressing that greater inclusion is essential to the continent’s sustainable development.
Speaking at the West Africa Women’s Political Leadership Forum in Abuja, Nigeria, Dr. Mahoi underscored the need to increase women’s representation in political leadership and decision-making, describing inclusive governance as a key driver of sustainable development.
Highlighting Sierra Leone’s progress, she pointed to policy and legislative reforms that have expanded opportunities for women to participate in governance and leadership. She said these achievements reflect the country’s commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering women.
Despite the progress, Dr. Mahoi acknowledged that significant challenges remain, particularly in the areas of economic empowerment, employment opportunities, and equal access to leadership positions. She stressed that strengthening women’s economic independence is essential to achieving meaningful and sustained political participation.
The Minister also reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s readiness to share its experiences and best practices with other African countries in promoting women’s protection, economic empowerment, and political inclusion.
She concluded by calling on African governments, regional institutions, civil society organisations, and development partners to work together to create an enabling environment where women have equal opportunities to lead and contribute to decision-making across the continent.
