As was instructed in a letter by the Government of Sierra Leone through the Ministry of Local Government all mayors, District Council Chairpersons, and Local Councillors across Sierra Leone’s political tenure in office end today, 1st March 2023.
This decision was taken by the government making reference to section 137 of the Local Government Act of 2022, (Act No.26 of 2022).
All Mayors, District Council Chairpersons, and Local Councillors are mandated to do a comprehensive handing over of their office to the Chief Administrator of their respective councils.
The Minister of Local Government and Community Affairs, Amb. Tamba J.S. Lamina congratulated them all for serving the country, bringing development in their ways, and wish them success in their next endeavor.
“Let me congratulate you at the end of your tenure and convey the ministry’s appreciation to all of you for serving your people and contributing to national development in your various ways. Together, we have been able to work collaboratively to enhance governance and service delivery. I must also inform you that His Excellency, the President has during his ‘Meet the People Tour recognized and appreciated the significant role of Local Councils in the governance architecture at the sub-national level,” he stated.
It was disclosed that the Chief Administrators have been directed accordingly to take a full record of the council assets and finances wherein the Directorate of Decentralization in the Local Government Ministry and the Fiscal Decentralization Directorate in the Ministry of Finance will continue their comprehensive monitoring of the Council activities.
It was also stated that the Chief Administrators will be provided with technical and professional support until the next administration is ushered in.
