The National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT) has assured contributors and pensioners that monthly pension payments remain secure and uninterrupted despite ongoing public scrutiny of some of its investment assets.

The assurance follows recent public discussions over the performance of a number of the Trust’s investments. NASSIT maintained that its financial strength should be assessed based on the performance of its overall investment portfolio rather than on individual assets.

According to the Trust, its investment strategy is designed to diversify risk by allocating funds across key sectors of the economy, including banking, hospitality, real estate, infrastructure and mortgage finance. The approach, it noted, not only protects contributors’ funds but also supports national economic development through investments that promote business growth and job creation.

Among NASSIT’s major investments are the Radisson Blu Mammy Yoko Hotel, the Freetown International Conference Centre and the Commerce and Mortgage Bank. The Trust said these investments demonstrate its commitment to generating long-term financial returns while contributing to Sierra Leone’s socio-economic development.

The Trust emphasized that fluctuations in the performance of individual investments are common among institutional investors globally and do not necessarily undermine the overall health of an investment portfolio. It stressed that effective governance, sound oversight and prudent portfolio management remain central to its investment decisions.

NASSIT further noted that it has consistently met its statutory obligation by paying pensions on time every month without disruption, underscoring its financial stability and ability to honour commitments to beneficiaries.

In addition to pension payments, the Trust said its long-term investments, particularly in the banking sector, have strengthened financial institutions by providing stable capital, while also supporting employment and contributing to the growth of critical sectors of Sierra Leone’s economy.

NASSIT reaffirmed its commitment to protecting contributors’ savings through prudent investment management while continuing to fulfil its mandate of providing sustainable social security benefits to workers and retirees across the country.
