Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, has engaged in a significant discussion with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew on how social media can drive economic growth, education, environmental protection, and youth empowerment in the country.

The conversation, which took place on March 11, 2025, highlighted the increasing influence of TikTok in Sierra Leone, where the platform boasts 1.5 million active uusersl approximately 17% of the population and contributes to about 30% of the country’s total internet traffic.

During their discussion, Sengeh and Chew explored key areas where TikTok could make a meaningful impact, including:

Helping local businesses expand their reach and connect with new customers.

Enhancing education by allowing teachers to reach more students through digital learning.

Supporting activism and environmental protection, particularly by mobilizing communities to clean rivers and beaches.

Boosting the creative industry by providing content creators with greater opportunities for visibility and financial sustainability.

Sengeh emphasized the importance of supporting Sierra Leone’s creative sector, recognizing the potential for social media monetization to empower young people. He also highlighted President Julius Maada Bio’s vision for digital transformation, stating:

“When President Bio flagged this issue, I understood his commitment to the youth. That’s why we’ve worked on expanding internet access, making smartphones more affordable, and putting in place the necessary regulatory and fiscal frameworks for transformation.”

A major point of discussion was TikTok monetization in Sierra Leone, which remains a challenge for local creators who struggle to generate income through the platform. Sengeh extended an invitation to Chew to visit Sierra Leone once the issue is resolved, expressing optimism about future collaborations.

“Hopefully, once we solve this issue, we can welcome him at an appropriate time,” Sengeh stated.

The engagement with TikTok’s leadership underscores Sierra Leone’s commitment to leveraging digital technology for economic and social progress, particularly in empowering businesses, educators, and young creatives.
