The Independent Police Complaints Board (IPCB) has launched a formal investigation into a shooting incident that reportedly left three unidentified people dead and several others injured in the Kroo Town Road and Bay Community areas.
According to the IPCB, the investigation was initiated on its own authority rather than following a public complaint, in accordance with Regulation 9 of the Independent Police Complaints Board Regulations, 2013, which allows the Board to investigate matters on its own initiative.
The Board said the investigation falls under two provisions of Regulation 3: subsection (1)(c), which covers incidents involving the discharge of a firearm by a police officer or the killing of a person by an officer, and subsection (1)(d), which covers injuries or assaults allegedly caused by police officers.
The IPCB said information about the incident was circulated on social media on September 13, prompting the Board to commence the investigation.
The Independent Police Complaints Board Regulations, 2013, provide the legal framework for the Board to investigate complaints and matters relating to police conduct.
The IPCB said it will keep the public informed as the investigation progresses.
No timeline has been provided for the completion of the investigation, while further details about the victims and the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear.
