Dr. Aruna Maada Jabbie, a medical doctor and paediatric resident at Choithram Memorial Hospital in Freetown, and brother to SLBA President Tuma Gento-Kamara, has died suddenly at the age of his medical career, leaving colleagues, friends and members of the wider Sierra Leonean community mourning his passing.
Dr. Jabbie passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, August 27, 2026. He was widely remembered as a dedicated, hardworking and compassionate medical professional who remained committed to his profession despite the challenges he encountered on his journey to becoming a doctor.
He began his medical education at the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS) in 2012 before travelling to Ukraine, where he continued and completed his medical studies.
Following his return to Sierra Leone, Dr. Jabbie pursued his medical career and served at Choithram Memorial Hospital, where he was undertaking paediatric residency training. He was also involved in collaborative medical work with specialised international surgical teams visiting Sierra Leone.
His death has triggered an outpouring of grief on social media, with colleagues, friends and members of the public paying tribute to him on platforms including Facebook and Instagram.
Those who knew Dr. Jabbie have described him as humble, cheerful and hardworking, while recalling his determination to fulfil his ambition of becoming a physician despite the difficulties he faced along the way.
Dr. Jabbie was also a member of the prominent Jabbi family. His elder sister, Tuma Adama Gento-Kamara, is the President of the Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA).
His unexpected passing has left the medical community, his family and many others who knew him mourning the loss of a young professional remembered for his dedication to medicine and service to others.
