The Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, has publicly welcomed former President Ernest Bai Koroma following his arrival in the country.

In a post shared on her official Facebook page, the mayor expressed delight at receiving the former Head of State at the Freetown International Airport, noting that his return comes exactly two years and six months after he last left Sierra Leone.

“It was wonderful to receive former President H. E. Ernest Bai Koroma at Lungi this morning. Grateful for this day,” she wrote.

The brief message has since attracted public attention, as Koroma’s return continues to generate reactions across the country.

Koroma left Sierra Leone more than two years ago on medical grounds following a treason arraignment for the November 26 failed coup.

On July 14th, 2026, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay issued a notice announcing the discontinuation of the former president’s trial.

Koroma is in Sierra Leone as one of the dignitaries invited by the Sierra Leone government to grace the ECOWAS Mid-year Summit in Lungi and Freetown.
