Botswana defeated Sierra Leone by 70 runs on Saturday in the opening match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional Qualifier A 2026.
Botswana scored 166-5 in their allotted 20 overs before restricting Sierra Leone to 96-7.
Sierra Leone will next face Cameroon on Sunday, May 24.
The tournament, which runs until May 30, features a 21-match single round-robin format. The top two teams will advance to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier 2027, a preliminary stage for the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Botswana and Kenya are currently considered the favorites to secure the two advancing spots.
Key players for Botswana include Maduo Motlhanka, Brandon Van Zyl, and Reginald Nehonde. Sierra Leone’s roster features Lansana Lamin, Raymond Coker, and Abass Gbla.
The two teams that advance from this event will join Tanzania and Ghana, who secured their places in the 2027 Regional Final earlier this year from the Africa Qualifier B tournament. The final two regional slots will be decided in October when Gambia, Nigeria, Lesotho, Mozambique, Uganda, and Zambia compete in Sub-Regional Qualifier C.
