Dr Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, Energy Sector Lead under President Julius Maada Bio, says he has no regrets joining the SLPP even after his strong public remarks during the 2018 elections where he used Alhassan and Alusine to describe APC and SLPP politicians.

In a recent online media discussion, Yumkella explained that the Alhassan and Alusine reference was a criticism of how both parties had governed over the years. Now that he is part of the SLPP-led government, he made it clear he has not taken back that statement. According to him, the message was never about party labels but about pushing for better governance and he still stands by it.

Yumkella said being in the ruling party is about getting serious work done. He explained that if he were in the opposition he would not have had the space to fix the problems he is tackling now.

He shared that President Bio personally asked him to take on what he described as the hardest job in the country which is fixing the energy sector. He said the president did not just want him alone but also the strength of his global network. Despite the criticism that comes with the role he took it on because he wanted to deliver real results for the people.

With over 30 years of international experience in energy systems Yumkella said he is building Sierra Leone’s future brick by brick. In just two years with the president’s full backing he says the SLPP is rolling out what he describes as the party’s biggest infrastructure drive yet.

He said he is happy to be in SLPP with no regrets and no apologies.

Regarding his Alhassan and Alusine statement, now that he is part of the system, he said the message was always about governance and that has not changed. He believes being inside the system gives him the chance to help fix the very problems he spoke about back then.
