Members of Parliament from Sierra Leone’s main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) have called on the Supreme Court to release senior lawyer and party member Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara, popularly known as JFK, who is being held for contempt of court.

The appeal comes amid an ongoing Supreme Court case between the government and the APC over disagreements concerning certain clauses in the proposed constitution.

In a statement, the APC MPs urged the court to reconsider Kamara’s continued detention, taking into account the apology he tendered during the proceedings.

“We respectfully call on the Supreme Court to reconsider his continued detention, give due consideration to the apology he tendered, and order his release,” the MPs said.

Kamara was held for contempt following an exchange of words with Chief Justice Komba Kamanda during the court proceedings. He was asked to apologise, but the court was reportedly dissatisfied with his initial apology.

The APC MPs argued that Kamara was carrying out his professional responsibilities as a lawyer and called on the judiciary to ensure fairness in the administration of justice.

They also expressed solidarity with the detained lawyer while maintaining that the party respects the law and the independence of the judiciary.

The lawmakers urged APC supporters to remain peaceful as the matter continues before the court.

“We appeal for restraint, fairness and a timely resolution to this matter,” the MPs said.

They added that they remained committed to defending the constitution in the interest of the people of Sierra Leone.
