In a significant boost for the nation’s global standing, Supreme Court Judge Honourable Justice Fatmatta Bintu Alhadi has been elected as the Gender Representative for West Africa to the prestigious Commonwealth Magistrates’ and Judges’ Association (CMJA).
The landmark election, which took place during the CMJA conference in Banjul, The Gambia, marks a proud moment for the Sierra Leone judiciary and is seen as a direct testament to the country’s commitment to judicial excellence and gender equality on the world stage.
Justice Alhadi’s new role positions her as a key advocate for gender balance within the court systems of West African Commonwealth nations, influencing policy and representation across one of the world’s largest legal networks.
The election is hailed as a major achievement for President Bio’s and Chief Justice Komba Kamanda’s shared vision of positioning Sierra Leonean professionals in influential international positions. In a further show of confidence in her leadership, Justice Alhadi was also recently appointed as the Chairperson of Sierra Leone’s General Legal Council (GLC), the body responsible for regulating the conduct of all legal practitioners in the country.
Chief Justice Komba Kamanda celebrated the victory, stating it was a deserved recognition for one of the judiciary’s brightest minds.
“Congratulations to Honourable Justice Fatmata Bintu Alhadi on her well-deserved victory. Her achievement is a proud moment for the judiciary and for Sierra Leone,” the Chief Justice remarked.
In her response, Justice Alhadi expressed deep honour and gratitude, highlighting the supportive environment that enabled her success.
“I am deeply honoured by this opportunity and grateful for the support and confidence placed in me,” Justice Alhadi said. “This would not have been possible without the visionary leadership of the Chief Justice, who has actively created pathways for judges from Sierra Leone to serve on these prestigious international platforms.”
Enhanced Global Profile: Sierra Leone gains increased visibility and a powerful voice within the 56-member Commonwealth.
Gender Advocacy: Justice Alhadi will champion greater inclusion of women in the judiciary across West Africa.
