Authorities have arrested a man following the circulation of a viral video showing the brutal abuse of a child in Waterloo, Western Rural District.
The suspect, believed to be between 30 and 50 years old and identified as the child’s biological father, is currently in police custody at the Corner Kick Police Station in Waterloo.
The video, which sparked widespread public outrage, reportedly shows the man physically assaulting the child for leaving the house without permission. In the footage, the child’s mother is seen unable to intervene, as sources say she was threatened with physical violence by the suspect if she attempted to stop the assault.
Following the video’s circulation on social media, officers from the Family Support Unit (FSU), together with their line managers, launched investigations to trace the location of the incident. Authorities later confirmed that the abuse occurred in a community near Five-Five in Waterloo, Western Rural District.
Meanwhile, the child victim has been scheduled for referral to an undisclosed care facility for abused children, where alternative care and psychosocial support will be provided.
The Ministry of Social Welfare and the Sierra Leone Police are working closely on the case and are expected to issue a comprehensive public update by the end of the day.
