Guma Valley Introduces Water Regulation System as Supply Challenges Persist
Sahid Bangura The Guma Valley Water Company has introduced a water rationing system across Freetown as part of measures to ensure equitable distribution amid ongoing supply challenges.
Managing Director Mariwan Kallon disclosed the plan during the government’s weekly press conference held on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, stating that the city has been divided into six zones, with each zone receiving water supply for approximately eight hours daily.
Kallon said the company has also installed 366 units of 10,000-litre water tanks in various communities to reduce reliance on pipelines and minimize losses caused by leakages.
He added that efforts are being intensified to clamp down on illegal water connections, with law enforcement agencies supporting enforcement measures. Additionally, meters have been installed on all hydrants to monitor water usage and reduce wastage.
Kallon expressed concern over encroachment on Guma catchment areas, warning that such activities threaten water sustainability, while commending government interventions to address the issue.
