U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended official congratulations to Sierra Leone on Monday in recognition of the nation’s 65th Independence Day.

In a press statement released on April 27, Rubio emphasized the enduring bilateral partnership between the United States and Sierra Leone, highlighting a mutual commitment to peace and prosperity.

“As we mark this important occasion, we reaffirm our dedication to working together to advance security and economic growth for the benefit of both our nations,” Rubio stated.

The Secretary of State concluded the diplomatic message by offering his best wishes to President Bio and the citizens of Sierra Leone as they celebrate their national holiday.

Sierra Leone is observing its 65th Independence Anniversary on Monday, 27 April 2026, under the theme: “Building a Responsive, Resilient and Cohesive Sierra Leone.” This year’s celebrations will be marked in a modest but meaningful manner, in line with directives from His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio.

As part of the commemoration, an interfaith service will be held at State House on Monday, 27 April 2026, beginning at 11:00 a.m. The service is expected to bring together religious leaders and citizens in a shared moment of unity, gratitude, and reflection on the nation’s progress since independence.

The statement further encouraged nationwide spiritual observances ahead of the main event. Muslims across the country have been invited to offer prayers for Sierra Leone and its people on Friday, 24 April 2026, while Christians are encouraged to do the same on Sunday, 26 April 2026.
