President Dr. Julius Maada Bio on Thursday, 25th June 2026, presided over the oath-taking ceremony of Osman I. Kanu, Esq., following his appointment as Solicitor-General of the Republic of Sierra Leone.
The ceremony, held in Freetown, formally ushered Mr. Kanu into office as one of the country’s top legal officers, responsible for supporting the Attorney-General and strengthening the administration of justice.
Speaking at the occasion, the Secretary to the President, Mr. Baba Fortune, referenced Section 65(2) of the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone (Act No. 6 of 1991), which empowers the President to appoint the Solicitor-General.

In his acceptance remarks, Mr. Kanu expressed profound gratitude to President Bio for the confidence reposed in him, describing his appointment as both an honour and a sacred responsibility. He noted the symbolic significance of the moment, pointing out that his appointment coincided with the Day of Arafah, while the oath-taking itself took place on the Day of Ashura, which he said served as a reminder of faith, service, and accountability.
“Faith has guided me throughout my professional journey and will continue to guide me in serving the people of Sierra Leone. I regard this appointment not as a reward, but as a solemn call to service,” he stated.
He further pledged to uphold the rule of law, strengthen democratic governance, and ensure that justice remains accessible to all citizens, particularly vulnerable groups. Drawing on his 22 years of legal experience, Mr. Kanu assured the President and the nation of his commitment to strengthening the institution and enhancing the effectiveness of the Office of the Attorney-General.

In his remarks, President Bio congratulated the newly appointed Solicitor-General and urged him to remain steadfast in upholding justice and the rule of law. He noted that the office carries significant national responsibility and expressed confidence in Mr. Kanu’s ability to deliver effectively.
“I want to wish you well as you assume this important responsibility. Be assured of my full support. I am confident that, with your wealth of experience, you will enhance the office’s effectiveness and contribute significantly to strengthening the institution. Congratulations once again,” President Bio stated.
The appointment is seen as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Sierra Leone’s justice sector and reinforce the Government’s commitment to the rule of law, accountability, and effective public service delivery.
