The family of 21-year-old Bayoh is reportedly demanding justice and a full explanation from the Sierra Leone Police after alleging that he was buried without their knowledge, consent, or involvement.
According to information provided by the police, Bayoh’s body was discovered around 10:00 a.m. following a reported drowning incident. Police further stated that he was buried later the same day at approximately 4:00 p.m.
According to popular Facebook blog Born2Blog, the family said they were not informed before the burial and were denied the opportunity to identify the body, conduct a post-mortem examination, or make funeral arrangements.
Relatives explained that Bayoh had been working for a man who later informed them that he had been found dead. However, they insist that no police officer contacted them before the burial took place.
The matter is currently being handled by the Lumley Police Division, where family members have gone to seek answers regarding the circumstances surrounding both Bayoh’s death and the decision to bury him within hours of the reported discovery.
The family says the only evidence they have been shown is a photograph of Bayoh’s body, which was presented to them after he had already been buried.
Describing the situation as deeply troubling, the family is now calling for the body to be exhumed and subjected to an independent post-mortem examination. They argue that the speed of the burial and the lack of communication have raised serious questions that must be addressed through a transparent investigation.
As of the time of publication, the Sierra Leone Police had not publicly responded to the family’s allegations or explained why the burial was carried out without notifying relatives. The family says it will continue to pursue justice until it receives what it describes as a clear and accountable explanation for the handling of Bayoh’s case.
