The Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA) has formally constituted a five-member Caretaker Body to oversee the affairs of the Association pending the conduct of a new Annual General Meeting (AGM) and executive elections.
The interim body was approved on Thursday, 6 August 2026, following the official handover of authority by outgoing SLBA President, Tuma Jabbie, bringing an end to the tenure of the Association’s previous executive.
Leading the newly established Caretaker Body is Solicitor-General Osman Kanu, Esq., who was elected Chairman after members unanimously adopted the proposed interim leadership.
Other members of the Caretaker Body include Hon. Gaveo, Esq., J. E. Kapuwa, Esq., Menisa Sesay, Esq., and L. M. Bayoh, Esq. The nominations were moved by K. Sandi, Esq., and received the approval of members during the meeting.
The Caretaker Body has been tasked with administering the day-to-day affairs of the Bar Association, facilitating reconciliation among members, and creating the conditions for a transparent and credible electoral process.
Its appointment comes after months of internal disputes that affected the operations of the Association, including disagreements over elections, membership issues, and governance, which culminated in the postponement of the Association’s recent AGM.
Members of the legal fraternity are hopeful that the interim leadership will help restore confidence within the SLBA and ensure a smooth transition to a newly elected executive.
The establishment of the Caretaker Body marks a significant step in the Association’s efforts to strengthen its governance and maintain stability while preparations are made for fresh elections.
