The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has honoured six officers who lost their lives during the 10 August 2022 protest with an interfaith memorial service held at the Senior Officers’ Mess, Police Headquarters, Kingtom.
The service brought together police officials, officers, bereaved families, religious leaders and other stakeholders to remember the fallen officers and reflect on their service and sacrifice to the country.
Inspector General of Police William Fayia Sellu, in his address, described the memorial as an occasion of grief and gratitude. He said the officers should be remembered for their commitment to protecting lives and maintaining peace and security despite the risks associated with police duties.
“Being a police officer requires a special kind of heart,” Sellu said, emphasising the courage required to report for duty despite the dangers involved.
He urged serving officers to uphold professionalism, integrity, discipline, courage and dedication, saying these values would help preserve the legacy of their fallen colleagues.
Sellu also expressed condolences to the families of the deceased officers, acknowledging the loss of parents, spouses, children and friends. He called for continued support for the bereaved families and said the sacrifices of the fallen officers should not be forgotten.
Assistant Inspector General of Police Sylvester Koroma also paid tribute to the six officers and those who were injured during the disturbances. He noted that police officers continue to face risks in the line of duty, including armed attacks and accidents, and stressed the need to strengthen police protection and community resilience.
The interfaith service included Christian and Muslim prayers, scripture readings and reflections for the fallen officers, their families and the continued peace and security of Sierra Leone.
AIG Brima Kanneh expressed sympathy to the bereaved families and urged serving officers to remain vigilant and committed to professionalism, unity and integrity.
The memorial concluded with prayers for the eternal rest of the fallen officers and comfort for their families, as the Sierra Leone Police reaffirmed its commitment to preserving their memory and honouring their service to the nation.
