A 22-year-old woman from Anderlecht has been arrested at Brussels Airport in Belgium after allegedly attempting to remove two suitcases containing approximately 51 kilograms of cocaine from the airport’s baggage hall.
The woman was arrested on July 31, according to reports by Belgian media outlets VRT NWS and Het Laatste Nieuws.
The suitcases were reportedly transported to Brussels on a flight originating from Sierra Leone, with a stop in Guinea, before arriving in Belgium.
According to the reports, the woman was not a passenger on the flight that carried the luggage. She allegedly purchased a low-cost ticket to gain access to the airport and enter the baggage area, where she was expected to collect the two suitcases.
Belgian authorities reportedly believe she was acting as an “extractor” whose role was to retrieve the suspected drug consignment from the baggage hall and remove it from the airport.
The woman, who is reportedly already known to authorities in connection with previous drug-related offences, was arrested before she could successfully leave the airport with the suitcases.
She has since been remanded in custody under an electronic ankle-monitoring arrangement following a decision by the pre-trial chamber.
The case has placed Sierra Leone among the locations linked to the reported movement of the cocaine shipment, although the available reports do not establish that the drugs originated in Sierra Leone or identify anyone in the country as being involved in the alleged trafficking operation.
Belgian authorities are expected to continue investigating the origin and intended destination of the cocaine, as well as the wider network allegedly responsible for transporting and collecting the shipment.
