Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay, has delivered a strong appeal for equitable geographical representation on the International Court of Justice (ICJ), stressing that West Africa must reclaim a seat on the Bench of the World’s Court.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of Vice President Dr Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh at a high-level symposium on the ICJ’s role in dispute resolution in Africa, Minister Sesay underscored the Court’s vital function in upholding the international rule of law and preserving peace. However, he emphasised that the bench must reflect fair global distribution, noting that the time has come for West Africa to be represented once again.

The symposium also served as the official venue for Minister Sesay to formally present Professor Charles Jalloh as Sierra Leone’s candidate for ICJ Judge.

Sesay highlighted that Prof. Jalloh’s candidacy enters the global race with strong momentum, having already secured formal endorsements from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU), alongside co-nominations from twelve states representing every region of the world.

Expressing the government’s strong backing, Minister Sesay praised Prof. Jalloh’s credentials and commitment to global justice.

“Sierra Leone presents Professor Jalloh’s candidature with great confidence,” Sesay stated, highlighting Prof. Jalloh’s distinguished scholarship and extensive legal experience. “He embodies the highest standards of integrity, independence, and judicial excellence, making him exceptionally well qualified to serve on the principal judicial organ of the United Nations.”
