The Chinese Embassy in Freetown hosted a reception on Sept. 16 to mark the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), celebrating decades of diplomatic and cultural ties with Sierra Leone.
The event, held at the embassy on Spur Loop, brought together Sierra Leonean government officials, diplomats, and representatives of the Chinese community, according to embassy organisers.
Ambassador Zhao Yong delivered remarks highlighting the enduring partnership between the two nations. He noted that 2026 also marks the 55th anniversary of China-Sierra Leone diplomatic relations and the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges.
Following the formal speeches, Chinese embassy staff staged a cultural performance for attendees. The program featured Chinese songs performed by embassy personnel and a martial arts demonstration set to traditional Chinese instrumental music, organisers said.
The display was described by organisers as a commemorative tribute to the anniversary and a gesture of cultural exchange between the two countries.
Sierra Leonean attendees praised the performance, which organisers said reflected the growing people-to-people connections underpinning bilateral relations.
The Chinese Embassy in Freetown serves as the sole diplomatic representative office of the People’s Republic of China in Sierra Leone. The 77th anniversary of the PRC’s founding has been marked by Chinese embassies worldwide in September 2026.
