Sierra Leone Joins African Tripartite Labour Migration Meeting in Kenya
Sahid Bangura Sierra Leone has joined representatives from other African countries in a Tripartite Labour Migration Meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, aimed at strengthening a common African approach to labour migration ahead of the 2026 Doha Dialogue on Labour Migration.
Sierra Leone was represented at the two-day meeting by Commissioner of Labour Sinneh Bockarie, Sierra Leone Employers Federation (SLEF) Executive Secretary Albert Ojo Collier and Sierra Leone Labour Congress (SLLC) Deputy Secretary-General Edward Y. Kamara.
The meeting, held from September 22 to 23, was convened by the African Union Commission with support from the International Labour Organization (ILO). It brought together representatives of governments, employers’ organizations and workers’ organizations from selected African countries.
Discussions focused on key labour migration issues, including fair recruitment, decent work, wage protection, access to justice, skills mobility, social protection and the protection of migrant workers’ rights.
Commissioner Bockarie chaired the focus group on Fair Recruitment, Employment Contracts and Wage Protection, where he stressed the importance of placing migrant workers’ rights and decent work at the centre of labour migration policies and engagements with destination countries.
Collier chaired the Access to Justice focus group, while Kamara participated in the discussions on behalf of the Sierra Leone Labour Congress.
The Nairobi meeting is expected to contribute to a Common African Tripartite Statement and recommendations for the upcoming Doha Dialogue on Labour Migration, scheduled for October 5–6, 2026, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The Doha Dialogue will focus on promoting fair and sustainable labour mobility between Africa and the GCC+, with discussions expected to cover skills and labour-market pathways, decent work and worker protection, as well as social protection, health coverage and the portability of benefits.
Sierra Leone’s participation brings together government, employers and workers’ representatives in the continental discussions on labour migration and contributes to preparations for the upcoming Doha Dialogue.
