Vice-President Juldeh Jalloh Honours Fallen Servicemen at Remembrance Day Ceremony
Sierra Leone’s Vice-President, Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, has paid tribute to fallen servicemen and women during a Remembrance Day commemoration in the capital, Freetown.
Dr Jalloh joined members of the Sierra Leone Ex-Servicemen’s Association at the Taylor-Cummings Memorial Garden for the annual ceremony, which included the planting of crosses and crescents in honour of those who died in military service.
In a statement following the event, the Vice-President said the gathering was an opportunity to recognise the courage, sacrifice and service of men and women who lost their lives serving the country.
He said their sacrifices were a reminder that peace and freedom should never be taken for granted, adding that the nation had a lasting responsibility to preserve the peace they fought to protect.
Sierra Leonean servicemen played major roles in both World Wars, with many serving in military campaigns beyond the country’s borders. Others also lost their lives during the country’s 11-year civil war, which lasted from 1991 to 2002.
The annual Remembrance Day commemoration provides an opportunity to reflect on their contributions and recognise the sacrifices made by generations of servicemen and women in defence of the country and its people.
