The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs (MoGCA), in partnership with UNICEF, has successfully concluded the regional validation of the Draft Child Safeguarding Policy, marking a significant milestone in efforts to strengthen child protection systems across Sierra Leone.
The proposed policy aims to ensure that every child is protected from abuse, exploitation, neglect, violence, and all forms of harmful practices. It also seeks to guarantee that children are safe, supported, and able to fully enjoy their rights in all environments, including homes, schools, communities, institutions, and online spaces.
According to officials, the draft policy has been developed in line with key national legal and policy frameworks. These include the Child Rights Act of 2025, the Prohibition of Early Child Marriage Act of 2024, the Disability Act of 2011, the Registration of Customary Marriage and Divorce Act of 2009, the Basic Education Act of 2023, the Employment Act of 2023, and the Sexual Offences Act of 2019 (as amended).

The regional validation process brought together a broad range of stakeholders, including representatives from government institutions, civil society organisations, development partners, child protection actors, community leaders, and youth groups. Participants reviewed the draft policy, provided feedback, and made recommendations to strengthen the framework ahead of its finalisation.
Officials said the initiative reflects the Government of Sierra Leone’s continued commitment, through the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs and its partners, to building a safer and more inclusive society for children.

Once finalised, the policy is expected to provide a comprehensive safeguarding framework that prioritises the best interests of every child and ensures that children across the country can grow, learn, and thrive in dignity, protection, equality, and opportunity.
Authorities reaffirmed their collective commitment to protecting every child and ensuring that no child is left behind.
