A Merseyside-based organized crime group led by a drug importer nicknamed “Thor” has been brought to justice after attempting to smuggle a massive £140 million worth of cocaine into the United Kingdom (UK) from Sierra Leone.
The intricate scheme involved concealing the 1.3 tonnes of cocaine within a shipment of garri flour destined for Wigan, England. However, the UK National Crime Agency, acting on intelligence, intercepted the drugs at the Port of Felixstowe in Suffolk.
Six members of the gang, including a 70-year-old pensioner, have been sentenced to a combined total of over 75 years in prison for their roles in this audacious drug trafficking operation.
The court heard how the gang meticulously planned the importation, utilizing a network of individuals and companies to facilitate the movement of the drugs. They even went to the extent of creating a fictitious company and employing deception to lease an industrial unit for the storage of the illicit cargo.
Despite their elaborate efforts, the gang’s ambitions were thwarted by the vigilance of UK law enforcement. The successful prosecution of this case serves as a strong deterrent to those involved in international drug trafficking and highlights the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies in combating this global criminal threat.
